It’s clear from an excerpt in Jon Meacham’s book In Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush that the former president wants the public to believe that like his eldest son and namesake, George W. Bush Jr., his younger son Jeb Bush will be his own man if he is elected the next president of the United States.

During a conversation about his disagreement with George W. Bush over what the role of the president and vice president should be, George H.W. Bush made the subtle implication that his sons’ have minds of their own.

Meacham quoted the senior Bush as saying, “Cheney had his own empire there and marched to his own drummer. The big mistake that was made was letting Cheney bring in kind of his own state department…But it’s not Cheney’s fault, it’s the president’s fault.”

The subtle implication is that no one should assume that a son of a former president is going to govern as his father did.

Also, father and son presidents are like other fathers and sons, they are humans. And humans are different. Yet despite these facts, Jeb Bush hasn’t convinced the public that he’ll govern differently than his father and his brother.

The problem the younger Bush faces is that politics is the family’s business, and many of the top people, like Dick Cheney, were in his father’s administration and his brother’s administration.

So it is right to assume that the people who advised the elder Bush and his eldest son will also advise his younger son if he becomes the 45th president.

Therefore, the implication that one son has a mind of his own then the other son will too will not be enough to persuade the public to vote for another Bush for president.
